Trump Suspended From Facebook For 2 Years

Facebook's suspension of former President Donald Trump will last for at least two years.

Trump's comments following the violence at the U.S. Capitol "constituted a severe violation of our rules, which merit the highest penalty available under the new enforcement protocols."

Trump will be eligible to have his account reinstated in January 2023.

"At the end of this period, we will look to experts to assess whether the risk to public safety has receded. We will evaluate external factors, including instances of violence, restrictions on peaceful assembly, and other markers of civil unrest. If we determine that there is still a serious risk to public safety, we will extend the restriction for a set period of time and continue to re-evaluate until that risk has receded," Nick Clegg, Facebook's VP of Global Affairs, wrote in a blog post.

If Facebook lifts the suspension, Trump's post will be under strict scrutiny, and he could face escalating sanctions if he continues to make posts that violate the company's community standards.

Senate Republicans are poised to block a study of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, to put the insurrection by Donald Trump’s supporters behind them.

Broad Republican opposition was expected in a Senate filibuster of the Biden presidency, even as the family of a Capitol Police officer who died that day and other officers who battled rioters went office to office asking GOP senators to support the commission.

The bill passed the House with the support of almost three dozen Republicans, but GOP senators said they believe the commission would eventually be used against them politically, as former President Trump, still has a firm hold on the party.

The expected vote is emblematic of the profound mistrust between the two parties since the siege, which has sowed deeper divisions on Capitol Hill even after the two parties fled together from the rioters that day.
