Thirteen years after it was accidentally flushed down a toilet, a gold diamond ring is back on the finger of the woman who lost it.

Minnesota resident Mary Strand, 71, says she set the ring -- which had been given to her by her husband for their 33rd anniversary – on her bathroom sink while she was washing her hands. While doing so, she accidentally knocked it into the toilet, which she had just flushed, she says. Although she made an attempt to snatch the ring from the swirling water, Strand watched helplessly as it was flushed away, she says.

Fast-forward 13 years: Strand’s daughter came across an online post by city employees in Rogers, Minnesota, who’d come across the ring while fixing a wastewater treatment machine. She notified her mother, who contacted the employees, Strand says. The two parties arranged a meeting, and now the ring is back in Strand’s possession.

Wastewater treatment manager John Tierney says the odds of finding the ring’s owner were “astronomical.”
