New Las Vegas Sign Illuminates Las Vegas Boulevard & Main Street

Tuesday night a new sign illuminated the "entrance" to the Downtown Las Vegas area at Las Vegas Boulevard and Main Street. The sign consists of a 12-foot-tall City of Las Vegas logo that was temporarily used (before the city reverted back to using the official seal), two 26-foot-tall showgirls modeled after the showgirls that would accompany former Mayor Oscar Goodman at social events during his tenure, and dice, poker chips and a roulette table situated in front of the sign. Parking for the sign will be opening in another month, provided by the Stratosphere Casino, Hotel & Tower.

The new sign replaces the original "Welcome To Fabulous Downtown Las Vegas" sign which was modeled after the more famous "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign designed by Betty Willis in 1959. The "Welcome To Fabulous Downtown Las Vegas" sign was destroyed when a truck collided with it in 2016. Video of that scene as well as the original sign is posted below.

Future plans for the area include an archway further south on Las Vegas Boulevard near Sahara, welcoming tourists and locals into the actual City of Las Vegas.

A little piece of trivia... this new "City of Las Vegas" sign is actually in Las Vegas... the "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign is not (it's technically about 4 miles from Las Vegas city limits and in the unincorporated town of Paradise in Clark County).
